Creative Portrait
For my ‘creative’ portrait I am looking at doing a
photograph of a good friend of mine she is a very striking girl who also is a well-known
singer in Canberra. She also has extremely long hair which in a way is a prop
of its own. I am looking to do a portrait either showing the strength of women,
and their power. Or a portrait which really reflects her personality, and her
singing background.
I have a couple of examples which I hope to try and use
to further develop my ideas.
I love the colours
in this image, and the way the girl almost has her body wrapped around the guitar
like it is her life.
This image is a very different view to a
guitar and the musician than we usually see and I love how the leading lines
lead us in to this persons love for music.
Again as I said before I
love the moment and the mood we can see in this man’s life and his passion and
love for music.
I think this image is very interesting as the symmetrical style of the
framing and the black and white image creates a strength within the image.
These
two pictures I think would work together, the first image has a very striking
framing and a style that would work for a magazine style portrait which is
something outlined in our brief, but I love the passion and character in the
second image I hope to create the mood of the second image in the first ones
composition.
I love these style portraits and have always wanted to attempt the mirror
reflection style picture one portrait tells one story but I think when a mirror
is added like it has done in the top image, you get this gorgeuos glow like
image where the reflection becomes apart of the person itself.
Finally I love this picture with the geometric
shapes created by her body and arms, and the rim lighting which exentuates the
pose even more. For some people a profile view works and for others it is a
burden, in this case I think it has proved a beautiful asset and pose for this
image.

Find at least 4 examples of group portraits
i think this shot was shot with a large softbox coming mainly from camera right. maybe even 2 to light up the whole group I think this was shot with the lights mainly from in front... with the lights quite far back so it becomes evenly lit.
The rest of my examples are all shots where the lighting is really quite flat, even and natural
My studio shots
for this shot i have a harsh light on camera left to creat the shadows and strong light and a back light to create the definition between subject ans background unfortunatley the subject top middle has become quite shadowed comparitivley i porbably shold have used a reflector to light her face
The rest of my shots were all shot with the same lighting two harsh lights on either side at the front and a soft box doing practically nothing on the backdrop...

Fill light and Separation light
·
Annie Leibovitz pictures!!
·
Broad lighting / short or narrow lighting
·
Broad lighting makes subject look rounder –
light the side of the face toward the camera
·
Short lighting makes the subject look slimmer –
light the side of the face away from the camera
·
Fill light
·
Introduce areas of fill in the shadows
o
key light
o
fill light after
o
adding a light into shadows reduces the contrast
o
second light or reflector can be used for fill
·
Reflectors
·
Silver – lots of light – hard light
·
Gold – yellow light – warm tones
·
White – Gentle light – soft light
·
Separation Methods
·
Hard or Rim light
·
Dark hair against dark backgrounds or light hair
against light backgrounds can be hard to define against a backdrop
·
Back lighting – Dan Winters
·
Rim Light (pointed toward model from behind) – Alexia
Sinclair - Joeseph Walts
·
Today’s Task
·
Head and Shoulders and ¾ portrait
·
Both portraits need to incorporate fill light or
reflector and a light to separate them from the background
·
Research and blog my findings
Dan Winters
I love the backlighting from this shot and like the mood it is creating, the black rim around her also adds to this mood, and her facial expression is again a key factor.
Lovegrove Photogrpahy
I like the rim lighting in the next two images and the effect the black and white had on these. The hair really gets a glisteney effect in these shots.

·
Simple
Portrait Techniques and Activity and Assessment (Study) Schedule handed out
·
Light meters
·
Set the ISO
·
Reflected light – reflects off a white shirt
more than a black shirt
·
Point the light toward the reflection
·
Ambient light – the light falling in the space
·
Point toward the camera from the subject
·
Spot metering – is the reading of light from
something particular in a scene. Good to use for things which are a bit further
away
·
Light meters are a vital part of a photographers
kit
·
For this semester we will be using lights
without soft boxes generally
·
Tungsten halogen lamps 3200 watts – used in the
studio
·
Rembrandt style lighting and Hollywood style
lighting
·
Soft – Hard lighting
·
Soft – even and well lit with minimal to no
shadows present
·
Hard – crisp with harsh shadows
·
Rembrandt lighting –
·
Characterised by the triangle on the cheek
·
It is a dramatic style of lighting
·
Not as forgiving
·
Not very flattering
·
Off to the side and up high with detail in the
shadowed eye
·
Butterfly or Hollywood lighting -
·
Characterised by the butterfly under the nose
·
Good for well defined cheek bones
·
Hard and dramatic light
·
Straight above the camera and subject straight
on
This is my best example from the class of Hollywood style lighting, i think it is quite nice and i like the mood of the photo. The shadow sits perfectly underneath her nose. This is my best example of Rembrandt lighting as this shot has detail into her eye, i like the way she is almost looking into the 'triangle' which has been created on her face.
This is just another of the shotsfrom our class which i liked although there is not enough light in her eye.
This is just another of the shots from our class which i liked although the hollywood lighting has not worked
finally i love the character in this shot and the ruffles on her sleeve really add to it :D
