·         Broad lighting / short or narrow lighting

·         Broad lighting makes subject look rounder – light the side of the face toward the camera

·         Short lighting makes the subject look slimmer – light the side of the face away from the camera

·         Fill light

·         Introduce areas of fill in the shadows

o   key light

o   fill light after

o   adding a light into shadows reduces the contrast

o   second light or reflector can be used for fill

·         Reflectors

·         Silver – lots of light – hard light

·         Gold – yellow light – warm tones

·         White – Gentle light – soft light

·         Separation Methods

·         Hard or Rim light

·         Dark hair against dark backgrounds or light hair against light backgrounds can be hard to define against a backdrop

·         Back lighting – Dan Winters

·         Today’s Task

·         Head and Shoulders and ¾ portrait

·         Both portraits need to incorporate fill light or reflector and a light to separate them from the background

As i was unable to take part in the class studio part i researched some shots i liked.

Dan Winters

I love the backlighting from this shot and like the mood it is creating, the black rim around her also adds to this mood, and her facial expression is again a key factor.

Lovegrove Photogrpahy

I like the rim lighting in the next two images and the effect the black and white had on these. The hair really gets a glisteney effect in these shots.
