I chose this headshot becuase i felt the angle being slightly above was more flattering for my model, and i was happy with the even ness of the light, and the way it has fallen over his face.
I chose this 3/4 becuase it was the best photograph where i felt my model was looking directly toward the camera with the best expression. He looks professional but appealing to the client. I struggled iwth the lighting of this corporate shot because my model had glasses you can see in my first shoot that i couldn't get the reflection off his glasses, i the original pose was not the most flattering. In my second shoot i got my model to sit down and brought the liht up higher, turnin my model slightly more side on and often shooting from above. I was happy with the end result.
I chose this group shot because i love the positioning of the boys, and their facial expresions are both very well controlled. I especially like the slight amount of light which has spilt onto their tools hanging on their belt.
This is the backgroud brief of my creative portriat which i submitted with my final selections. Which will help describe the reasons behind why i took this photo.
Creative Portrait
For this creative portrait I was trying to portray the
beauty and also simplicity of my friend Kirrah, I wanted to portray her inner
glow and strength through an image. I
started off with the ideas of definite rim lighting with a strong stance
portrait portraying her gorgeous flowing curly hair as best as possible, as I
believe hair is another prop in itself, if used correctly, I wanted to portray
women or girls are strong individuals, who hold the power and the key to a
bright future. Or using her guitar and showing her subtle sweet beauty that she
shares with others when she sings. These were a couple of my original ideas
from my creative portrait breif;
I believe these poses were really strong and empowering
shots that I loved the general feel of.
These two shots showed sweetness and simplicity of the model
to show character and emotion.
I brewed on these ideas over a number of days and eventually
looked away from these ideas and further into tonal and seasonal ideas, it was
Autumn and I love the greens and browns of the trees around Canberra at this
time of year. We discussed that my images would need to be portrait and that I
needed a solid idea before the day of the shoot. I discussed this idea with
Kate about looking at the tones and colours of Canberra and introducing some
balloons to brighten up the colours and overall mood of the image, sticking
with the original lighting concepts I had started with. On we picked out some
big comfy Canberra style Autumn coloured clothes and then bought some balloons
to complement the colours. I went with the white background to make my model
stand out and mainly front light so the background went grey.
The first shot began with a main light toward her face and a
rim light on her hair making her seem to glow even more. I loved the way there
was a simple and subtle vignette, we trialled with her looking toward the
camera and up at the balloons with different facial expressions.
I was struggling with the size of the backdrop
and the helium balloons and getting the whole shot in frame so we tried sitting
down and pulling the balloons in closer, which also seemed to do the job, I
didn’t like the way you could see the box she was sitting on, although the
framing worked for the magazine cover style shot. I struggled with the lighting
in this shot wanting to balloons lit but not the background and my model lit
but again not the background, we tried many different types of reflectors to
reflect light into the shadows on her legs where it was becoming just
completely black and we were losing detail; with no luck, we changed poses.
Then we began using the Balloons instead as a prop but as
part of the background, and got my model to change her stance a bit more and
look side on with a bit of a cheeky grin, thinning her down slightly and
changing the style. I loved the way this shot began to turn out, and the shadow
along her cheek bone was giving the shot so much dynamics. I still wasn’t quite
sold on the image, but I was definitely my favourite so far. We had a light for
the balloons and a light for her, although I didn’t quite like the hotspot in
the bottom left hand corner.
Finally we changed the idea up completely came in close and
cropped in tight showing her glowing nature with the coloured balloons framing
her. This is the shot I chose for my final image to submit I think it really
shows her character and I love the gradient of colour in the background. The
main light is slightly to the camera right of the model giving her nicely
defined features. I love the style of this shot and I think it would appeal to
all audiences of the magazine, it could be the cover shot for a party feature, after
all Autumn is the season of parties.
