Workshop One – Studio          19-03-12

Kate Luke                          Week Six                                        Semester One

·         Simple Portrait Techniques and Activity and Assessment (Study) Schedule handed out

·         katelukephoto@gmail.com

·         Light meters

·         Set the ISO

·         Reflected light – reflects off a white shirt more than a black shirt

·         Point the light toward the reflection

·         Ambient light – the light falling in the space

·         Point toward the camera from the subject

·         Spot metering – is the reading of light from something particular in a scene. Good to use for things which are a bit further away

·         Light meters are a vital part of a photographers kit

·         For this semester we will be using lights without soft boxes generally

·         Tungsten halogen lamps 3200 watts – used in the studio

·         Rembrandt style lighting and Hollywood style lighting

·         Soft – Hard lighting

·         Soft – even and well lit with minimal to no shadows present

·         Hard – crisp with harsh shadows

·         Rembrandt lighting –

·         Characterised by the triangle on the cheek

·         It is a dramatic style of lighting

·         Not as forgiving

·         Not very flattering

·         Off to the side and up high with detail in the shadowed eye

·         Butterfly or Hollywood lighting -

·         Characterised by the butterfly under the nose

·         Good for well defined cheek bones

·         Hard and dramatic light

·         Straight above the camera and subject straight on
This is my best example from the class of Hollywood style lighting, i think it is quite nice and i like the mood of the photo. The shadow sits perfectly underneath her nose.
This is my best example of Rembrandt lighting as this shot has detail into her eye, i like the way she is almost looking into the 'triangle' which has been created on her face.
This is just another of the shotsfrom our class which i liked although there is not enough light in her eye.

This is just another of the shots from our class which i liked although the hollywood lighting has not worked
finally i love the character in this shot and the ruffles on her sleeve really add to it :D
